27.05.04 fearful symmetry

On the very day I left my job at the Big Corporation, Gord, one of my best friends who is frequently mistaken for my brother, joined it.

Today he writes me:
I have now completely gone over to the dark side!

I am presently sitting in a 100% cube shaped cubicle on the 11th floor of a glass tower that is surrounded by other glass towers. I am wearing a tailored white shirt with an appropriately conservative silk tie. I now shave every day, vs. only when I have to meet clients. I am working in a high-tech firm, yet instead of being surrounded by hippy-nerds talking about B5 hair clip ships, why Glamdring didn’t glow, or why Nathalie Portman should only wear leather, I am surrounded by other cubites who don’t talk at all!

Yet, tonight I play D&D (Elven Bard with a sentient blade), this weekend I practice the ancient art of the sword of Kuen Wu Mountain, & next June I go to a seminar to work on development of Tsan Si Jing (Silk Reeling Energy)!

I feel like ‘Mr. Anderson’.

To which I reply:

“Despair not, Darth Gordius, for… there is another.

Just as you succumbed to the dark side, your secret twin sister escaped its clutches and joined the rebels.

Gone are the power suits; I’ve been wearing denim, anime hair (or Leia buns) and my Emily shirt with the pink skull buttons. Why, just yesterday we had a meeting in which we decided NOT to have the character’s limbs get cut off, but instead, to have blood and guts spray to cover the camera lens… because it’s Nicer That Way. I took a paycut, but I’m surrounded with figurines, posters, and the neatest toys.

There is A New Hope.”

In other words, I’m really happy!

25.05.04 summertime…

Every once in a while, everything that’s going wrong just solves itself in one fell swoop. This was the case for me going into this long weekend. Air Canada made a deal that will keep it out of bankruptcy long enough for the trip to Scotland to take place. I had my going away party on Friday night at my old job and was starting my new one on Monday. I didn’t have to work on the weekend, although I had previously committed to. We had great weather for two days despite MeteoMediocre’s predictions.

So it was one of those happy happy weekends. Went to movies, a concert, played games, took walks, and… squished my dog.

20.05.04 love that game

From a CBC story about Calgary winning the conference: “Stanley Cup fever has reached most corners of the city, inspiring one high school to schedule final exams around the games in the final series, which gets underway next week. The school doesn’t want students trying to write exams the morning after a game.”

(thanks Dr. Wank)

Also, and Bill will be happy about this, Don Cherry last night was bitching against hockey fans making too much noise. “Don’t be jerks”, he said, noting that the revelry could backfire, as merrymakers even woke up the Flames themselves.

18.05.04 updates

For lack of anything major going on, here are some of the minor things.

- I’m putting in 14-hours days at the job on this final week, while at the same time reading up on things I should know for the new job next week.

- This weekend I’m planning on making a bonfire with my corp threads.

- I’m anxiously following the news for updates on the Air Canada situation. If everything goes well, I should start my new job on Tuesday, work there for four days, and go on two weeks vacation. I really need it.

- I’m suffering from a summer cold.

- Comet has a bad eye infection. I never thought a Boston Terrier could look even more pathetic, but then I saw her with her red eyes and one of those sick dog collars. I’d be heartbroken for her, if she didn’t look so damn funny.

- Finally got around to doing my taxes. When they owe you 1,50$, do they even bother to send a check?

13.05.04 congratulations

Comet graduated doggie first grade last night. We’re very proud. She was stressed out about the finals (especially in her least favorite subject, Stay) but in the end it and went quite well. Now Sit, Stand, Lay Down, Stay and Heel have no secrets for her.

She is taking a sabbatical during our vacation, but she’ll probably continue onto second grade this summer.

Way to go, pooch!

12.05.04 news!

I tendered my resignation today. I have accepted a position as a project manager in a multimedia company.

I am taking a pay cut, but not as catastrophic a cut as I first anticipated. I’ll be working more, but I expect to actually want to go to work, for a change. Considering how miserable I’ve been at work in the past year, this is very good all around, all things considered.

It’s also definitely a great new challenge for me. I’d like to tell you I’m super relieved and glowing like a pregnant lady, but my stomach is in knots. I’ll need to learn a lot very quickly, and I really want to do well. Yay!

07.05.04 just asking

How much of a paycut (percentage-wise) would you take for a job that you’d really enjoy?

06.05.04 it would make an interesting post anyway

If your vet offered you a chance to assist in the spaying of your pet, would you?

As far as “reasons to buy a camera” go, it doesn’t get much better than that!

04.05.04 did a building full of project managers blow up?

Three unsolicited offers for interviews in two days. And one solicited interview.

Who would have guessed? Redheads have the most fun of all!

01.05.04 oops

I wanted just a little change, just something to do on a Friday night. The box said “Chocolate Mousse”: dark brown with lighter, chocolate highlights. Nothing like those horrendous streaks you see everywhere. You know, even tones.

Well, it’s a change all right. I’m a frikkin redhead. And the color is even all right. As in Dana-Scully-red all over.

I’ve never seen an orange chocolate mousse before, not until today.
