18.10.04 casting call for yulblog: the movie

During a chat with Martine tonight, she mentioned how people often told Blork he looked like Alec Baldwin, and how they told her she looked like Jodie Foster. I told her I got the same about Neve Campbell. This led to a chat involving Patrick and Stephanie about who would play various Montreal bloggers in Yulblog: The Movie.

Our suggestions:
Aaron: Guy Pearce (I’m proud I found that one)
Maciej: David Duchovny (I’m proud I found that one too)
Bill: Andie McDowell, Janeane Garofalo, Cher.
Maggie: Tippy Hedren, Eartha Kitt.
Karl: Rupert Everett.
Boris: Paul Bettany (sorry Boris, but I was outvoted on that one), Robert Duncan McNeill.
Alex: Freddy Rodriguez.
Nika: Parker Posey.
Stephanie: Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Cheung.
AJ: Peter Sellers, but only in this picture.
Patrick: We never agreed on a suitable lookalike.

So what do you think? Do you have any better casting ideas for yulbloggers?

06.07.04 follow the white rabbit

(messages edited for brevity)

“Light Speed Chick,

Found your blog the other day. I wanted to tell you the series of strange events that led me to the site.

I work as a sys admin and get lots of calls for assistance with printers and whatnot. The other day one of the receptionists called me up and said there was something wrong with her printer. I decided to unplug it and take it off the floor from under the desk and put it on to the desk for a closer look. Unplugged the power and network jacks and went to pick it up. Under the printer was a long slice of carrot. ‘How did that get there?’ I wondered.

Well, with the printer on the desk I took a look in the top paper feeder of the printer. At first look I thought it was a big red jellybean in the feeder. After picking it up I realized it was a tomato.

I just turned around and looked the receptionist. She told me she had dropped her salad and the tomato must have fallen in. Hilarity ensued.

I decided to search for rabbit images on the net and print one to her printer. About halfway down on the first Google results page for ‘rabbit’ was a picture of a person dressed up for a Halloween party. It was from your site. I spent a good portion of the rest of the day reading your blog. Great site.

Flawed Karma”

“Hi Lightspeedchick,

I like your site, and Comet is very cute. My dog’s name is Comet too. I found your site when I was looking for a picture of a rabbit for him. There’s a picture of his mother on the wall next to his food bowl, and I thought he’d like a picture of a rabbit too.

06.07.04 the monkey on my back

A little while ago Blork and Martine asked us to blog about the monkeys on our backs, the things we’ve been putting off.

Today I realized that the thing I keep meaning to do, but keep putting off, is to blog about the things I keep meaning to do, but keep putting off.

23.03.04 ha! how about that!

My second blogging anniversary came and went without my noticing. Oh well, happy belated anniversary, dear Chronicles. You’ve put me in contact with so many fun people, brought me in so many unexpected and wonderful directions, that I forgot your birthday.

28.02.04 a question for you movable typers…

How do you set your configuration so that commenting on older entries are automatically disabled?

Thanks.

Spammers, I hate you.

19.11.03 brave new blog

Overheard at the office last week:

(I walk into some stereotypical older corp man’s office, and see that there’s another SOCM already there)
Me: Oh, sorry, didn’t mean to interrupt.
SOCM #1 (jokingly): It’s okay, it’s not like I was hearing his confession [in the religious sense]. Why, do you have anything to confess?
Me: No need. I’m having dinner with my priest tonight.
SOCM #2: What? A real priest?
Me: Yep, a real, live Catholic priest.
SOCM #1: You have a priest?
Me: Well, I have a friend who became a priest.
SOCM #1 (looks at me funny): How old is he?
Me: Mid-thirties.
SOCM #2: That’s rare.
Me: I know. He’s had articles in the paper written about him because young new priests are so rare.
SOCM #1: Must be an interesting person.
Me: That he most certainly is. It’s always interesting to hear his take on things, which is often so different from anyone else’s.
SOCM #2: What do you normally talk about?
Me: You know, philosophy, theology, society…
SOCM #2 (interested): So, what are you guys going to talk about tonight?
Me: I’d guess Matrix Revolutions.

Anyway, I thought this was a fitting way to introduce my dear friend Tom, who has recently started a blog. His topics range from the meaning of chastity, to a review of one of Keanu’s crappier movies, via the Grey Cup game. Give him a click!

Welcome to the blogosphere, Tom!

16.11.03 vive la resistance!

I just checked my e-mail only to find I had six new comments on my blog. Six! In the last hour! What is it I blogged that incensed so many? Surely some of it is comment spam.

Well, all of it was comment spam. Pissed off, I remembered that Patrick had recently posted a link to a comment spam manifesto in which the author exhorts bloggers to fight back. He says to comment spammers:

What you failed to understand is that bloggers are smarter, better connected, and more technologically savvy than the average email user. We control the medium that you are now attempting to exploit. You’ve picked a fight with us and it’s a fight you cannot win.

(…)We now intend to fight back.

Bloggers will track you down and notify your hosting providers about your activities. We will tell your ISPs what you are using their connections for. We will let the makers of the products you are advertising know of your despicable sales methods. We will hit you where it hurts by attacking your source of income.

Inspired, I went to the site of the company that advertisement was for. I e-mailed them about what was going on, then I called them. Sunday, so no answer. But I’ll call them again. I’m currently trying to track down the spammer’s ISP as well.

I’m sorry if I’m reposting a lot of what Patrick already said, but I think it’s important that word get out.

28.08.03 i’m in the clear!

In case you were wondering, you are not currently reading the dullest blog in the world.

Hee.

15.08.03 not dead yet

The site was down due to the major outage that occurred yesterday. Too bad, because I actually had a few things to say today. Now we’re back, but it’s past five on a Friday. 5 à 7 time…

Have a good weekend.

12.08.03 ok, now!

You can now update your bookmarks. This blog has permanently moved to www.lightspeedchick.com.

I know, I know, no more good ol’ www.lightspeedchick.com/blog/main.html. Is nothing sacred anymore?

(Thanks Steph)
